Neighborhood Tours: Old Pasadena Walking Tour – “From Victorian to Modern”

“From Victorian to Modern” explores Pasadena’s original downtown, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as it has transformed over the years from its Victorian roots, through its years of deterioration, and back to being an example of downtown restoration and revitalization for the entire country as one of Pasadena Heritage’s first preservation success stories. We will be making special stops at We Olive and The Soap Kitchen for a special behind the scenes look at these local establishments.

Neighborhood Tours: “Ford Place – What Does the Future Hold?”

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Ford Place is a residential subdivision created in 1902. This small district of ten houses includes Craftsman, Shingle, Prairie, Tudor Revival, and Mission Revival. Currently part of the Fuller Seminary Campus it is soon to be sold so Pasadena Heritage is working with interested parties to determine the future of the adaptively reused properties. Take a tour and learn their potential fate.

Lecture: “A Fresh Look at the Heinemans”
Time: 9:30 – 10:30 am

Local researcher and historian John Ripley will review the work of Arthur and Alfred Heineman, architects considered by many to be second only to the Greenes in Southern California. The talk will incorporate recent research giving a broader and deeper view of their architectural practice than has previously been available, including newly-discovered works. No matter how familiar you may be with the work of these talented brothers, you will learn something new during this talk.
Lecture: “From Craftsman to Midcentury – Influences of Pasadena Architecture”
Time: 11:00 am – noon

Dave Nufer, Pasadena Heritage researcher and docent will present a lecture on the significant connections and influences that Craftsman architecture has had on later styles of architecture, specifically Midcentury. See the differences and similarities in design and philosophy and how Pasadena’s architectural heritage is connected. Following the lecture will be a bus tour, taking guests throughout Pasadena to see examples of these connections. Bus tour tickets sold separately.

Lecture: “The Craftsman Era – A Time of Change for the American Kitchen”
Time: 1:00 – 2:00 pm

Marguerite Duncan Abrams has studied the evolution of the way Americans have used their kitchens. This lecture explores the way the Craftsman era has influenced designs and use change from the Victorian era. Marguerite not only studies kitchens but also uses them expertly and promises some tastes from her own kitchen!
Lecture: Frances Gearhart, Pasadena Artist
“Behold the Day”
Time: 2:30 – 3:30 pm

As a Pasadena artist, Frances Gearhart (1869-1959) was embedded in the time, place and ideals of the Arts and Crafts movement. Presenter, Susan Futterman, will talk about how Frances Gearhart’s color block prints of the California landscape personifies a handcrafted aesthetic. She was bold in her use of color and powerful in the lines of keyblock. Seasons and times of the day captivated her. She celebrated the wintry day, the morning sun on the hills, the splendor of fall. Hence the title, “Behold the Day.”
Bus Tour: Altadena’s Heritage

Altadena Heritage was founded in 1986 to educate people about their great architecture and preservation issues. Located just north of Pasadena, Altadena rests against the mountains, and is viewed today much as it was a hundred years ago, as a retreat from the city below. Like Pasadena, the city boasts several significant architect-designed homes. Steve Haussler served on the board of Altadena Heritage for many years, he is a second-generation realtor specializing in historic properties, and is sponsoring the Craftsman Weekend bus tours. Together with Tim Gregory, the Building Biographer and founding Chairman of Altadena Heritage, they will lead this bus tour that will highlight some of the great works of Altadena.

Bus Tour: “Sue’s Picks: Highlights of Forty Years of Preservation”
Time: 1:00 – 4:00 pm

Take an overview of Pasadena bus tour with Sue Mossman, Executive Director of Pasadena Heritage as she reminisces about her forty years working for Pasadena’s preservation. Sue will point out several significant Pasadena landmarks that were saved through great efforts and cooperation with the city workers and preservationists, including several Craftsman homes and landmark districts that have easement protections. Guests will get off the bus for a special guided interior tour of historic Macy’s, the Langham Hotel Footbridge, and City Hall.

This bus tour will continue the conversation presented in the “Craftsman to Midcentury” lecture that takes place in the morning. Join researcher and Pasadena Heritage docent Dave Nufer has he takes you around Pasadena and shows examples of explore influences of Craftsman architecture on later styles of architecture, specifically midcentury. Lecture and Reception: The Inaugural Dr. Robert Winter Lecture Series
Time: 5:00 – 7:00 pm

In honor of the late Dr. Robert Winter, Pasadena Heritage, the Pasadena Center Operating Company, The Blinn House, The Gamble House and The Pasadena Museum of History will be co-hosting a lecture and reception. Historian Ann Scheid will present the lecture from 5:00 – 6:00 pm. A special plaque has been commissioned by the Pasadena Center Operating Company and installed in the historic Exhibit Hall C, at the Pasadena Convention Center and will be revealed during a subsequent reception. The reception is from 6:00 – 7:00 pm.
