Below are brief descriptions for all events scheduled during our week-long Virtual Celebration of the Colorado Street Bridge. Your ticket gains you entrance to all of these events, except as noted. However, please note the Virtual Beer Tasting & Bridge Trivia event on Friday requires registration for that specific event.

Sunday, August 9th
Custom and Classic Car Cruise

Starts at 9:30 a.m.
To kick off a week-long celebration of the Colorado Street Bridge, Pasadena Heritage is paying homage to one of the most popular parts of the Bridge Party: the classic and custom cars! Classic cars from Pasadena and all over the Los Angeles area will cruise through some of Pasadena’s historic neighborhoods and then parade across the Colorado Street Bridge. Lecture on the History of the Bridge with Author Chip Jacobs

Join us for a lecture on the Colorado Street Bridge’s rich history and its preservation story. Pasadena Heritage has long been a champion of the Bridge, highlighting its need for repairs in the 1970s and working on its major seismic upgrade in the1990’s. Our celebration in 1993 when the Bridge reopened was the organization’s biggest Bridge Party on record! We will share the history and tell the story of the fight to save this landmark structure. Joining us will be bestselling author and journalist Chip Jacobs. Jacobs’ writing has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, CNN, Wired and elsewhere. His most recent book is his debut novel, Arroyo, an entertaining work of historical fiction that swirls around construction of the Colorado Street Bridge beginning in 1911.

Panel Discussion on Fencing on the Colorado Street Bridge

Over the course of its history, this iconic structure has undergone several design changes to deter and prevent suicides. Most recently, a Task Force worked for more than a year to provide recommendations for a more effective, permanent solution to this ongoing and challenging problem. Preservation Director Andrew Salimian will host a panel discussion with fellow Task Force members and project architects to discuss the process and outcome for the design of the proposed new fence.

Drum Circle – Noon
Story Time and Bridge Building – 6:00 p.m.
The Colorado Street Bridge Party has always been a time for Pasadena’s youngest residents to experience and enjoy their local history. This year we invite children and their families to join us on Zoom for two different programs! Bridge Party favorite Alan Bruni will host a virtual drum circle. Following that lively event, Education Director Patty Judy will host a story time, reading a children’s book about bridges. After the story, Patty will lead a friendly interview with Chris Peck, architect, engineer and founder of PECK Architecture Structural Civil, with a hands-on bridge building activity. A supplies list for bridge building will be provided in advance.

SPONSOR ONLY EVENT – Artist Talk with Kenton Nelson

Corporate and Individual Sponsors and their guests are invited to join us for a personal talk with artist Kenton Nelson. Internationally acclaimed, Nelson was born and raised in Los Angeles, and for the last 35 years has had his art studio in Pasadena. His paintings have been featured five times on the cover of The New Yorker magazine. Recent exhibitions of Nelson’s work have been enjoyed from Los Angeles to London, Vienna, and Zurich. He has been on the faculty of the Otis Parsons Art Institute in Los Angeles and the Academy of Art in San Francisco. Over the years Nelson has painted the Colorado Street Bridge time and again, with the sale of each painting and subsequent limited-edition prints benefiting Pasadena Heritage. Join us for a delightful visit with the artist who will talk about influences on his art and his experience painting this iconic structure.
MEMBER ONLY – Audio Walking Tour
Pasadena Heritage will release an audio tour to accompany the specially-created walking tour of the South Grand area adjacent to the Colorado Street Bridge. It will offer a professionally narrated, in-depth look at the area with some special vignettes not included in the brochure. The audio tour is a member’s only “thank you” from Pasadena Heritage.
Band Music Videos
We could never forget the bands whose tunes provide the perfect accompaniment to a sunset over the Bridge! Join us on in the comfort of your own home for some extra special performances Bridge Party favorites put together just for this year’s Virtual celebration. Its not to be missed! Friday, August 14th
Virtual Happy Hour & Bridge Trivia with Eagle Rock Brewery
6:00 p.m.
Join Pasadena Heritage for a virtual happy hour and enjoy some beers from Eagle Rock Brewery, a Bridge Party favorite. Expert beer brewers and Pasadena Heritage docents will host this virtual beer tasting, followed by a fascinating session of Pasadena and the Colorado Street Bridge trivia. Please note capacity for this event is limited. Beer must be ordered through Eagle Rock Brewery, cost not included.

A Look Back
Pasadena Heritage will broadcast a special recap of all the events of the previous week. This entertaining Look Back presentation is being created to wrap up all the presentations and activities enjoyed during the previous days and to thank all who participated in this year’s Virtual Celebration of the Colorado Street Bridge.
